Money, Money, Money – why it’s not funny!

Richard Branson said “Never go into business purely to make money. If that’s the motive, you’re better off doing nothing.”

In recent months I have come across a number of fellow business owners who are so obsessed with where their next pound is coming from, that they will do anything, including trampling over personal feelings and ignoring basic business etiquette to get it.

What’s your motivation?

Most successful entrepreneurs say that their primary motivation has been to build something lasting, not to make a lot of money. And I would agree, my motivation to set up, build and develop my social media business comes from the enjoyment I get from the work that I do, combined with the thanks and respect from my clients because of the great results that I can help them to achieve. Whilst I need money, as we all do to live, it is most definitely a by-product, not the main motivating factor to running my own business. Continue reading

Let’s play nicely!

Networking, a place to meet like minded people, build relationships and trust, make lasting friendships and ultimately get some business.

But wait, is this always the case?  Well frankly no.

Now don’t get me wrong there are some wonderful people who go networking and I have made some great friendships with people but there is always the oddball, come on admit it you’ve met one if you are honest.

Some people just don’t get networking, they go once and say it’s not for them, they didn’t get any business from it or they felt uncomfortable.  But with everything in life you have to give it time, talk to people about anything and everything, except your business. That can come later.  Smiling

How does your business card shape up?

business cardNo self respecting business owner would be without a business card would they?  No of course they wouldn’t.  They are your shop window to all your services and products, provide your phone number, website address and other relevant information.

However, one of the things that always seem to be missing are your social media channels. The whole world and his dog are on social media nowadays, (yes dogs do have twitter accounts), so why wouldn’t you tell people you are too?

Is it enough to just have the symbol on the card? Yes if your twitter handle is the same as your business name, if not put the name of your account on.  Don’t leave it to chance that they may visit your website and find out from there.  Chances are they probably wont. Continue reading

It’s not just a numbers game

Do you get excited every time you get a new follower or like? Are you monitoring the increase in likes on your FB page? It gets a bit addictive doesn’t it?

But, there’s always one of those isn’t there? Are you checking your notifications as this is what really counts? How much interaction are you getting? Are you talking to people and are they responding?

Without interaction and engagement what have you got? I’ll tell you, you have an advertising board and nothing more Continue reading

Are you thinking outside of the box whilst pushing the envelope?

Box Envelope

So come on who has heard these two phrases ad nasaeum, or maybe even used them!  Is it just me or are some of these phrases just used for the sake of using them and do people even know what they mean?

Another of my all time favourites and it seems to be doing the rounds at the moment is “No brainer”.  Okay I know what it means but come on people please think of a new one.

The other word I find that is overused is bespoke.  Are you actually doing something that is unique for your customer or are you just trotting that out so that it looks like you are.  You will get found out if you are.  When I speak to someone who I want to do business with I will be able to tell whether they are going to tailor their product to me or not.

Everything seems to be a journey these days.  For example, when the Strictly Come Dancing celebrities are asked about their time on the show they say “It has been an incredible journey”, I thought a journey was when you went on holiday, or at least it used to be.

Have you ever been in a meeting where someone says “We need to diary up as we need some FaceTime”  – Excuse me – Do you mean can we arrange a meeting, if so then why not say so.

Here are some more quirky sayings, some are okay but others sound just plain silly to me.

Moving the goal posts

Put this one to bed

Take it offline

Bring out the big guns

Close of play

Tipping Point

Bring to the table

Joined up thinking

Not enough bandwidth

Strategic staircase

Reinventing the wheel

Pick up and run with it

Off piste

Turnkey solution

Win win

Who has been watching something on television and heard the person being interviewed say, “I gave it 110%” – really how do you do that.  There is no such thing, it is 100% full stop.

Another quirky one I have heard of is “Blue Sky Thinking” – do people think this makes them sound more intelligent?

And finally, my all time favourite (and I have no idea what it means) is “Grabbing the low hanging fruit”! – If you know please leave me a comment and tell me.

So next time you are in a meeting or networking see how many of these sayings you hear and I bet a smile creeps across your face.

Anyway must go as I now have to give 110% to my blue sky strategic staircase thinking!
