Social Media and Beyond

Money, Money, Money – why it’s not funny!

Richard Branson said “Never go into business purely to make money. If that’s the motive, you’re better off doing nothing.”

In recent months I have come across a number of fellow business owners who are so obsessed with where their next pound is coming from, that they will do anything, including trampling over personal feelings and ignoring basic business etiquette to get it.

What’s your motivation?

Most successful entrepreneurs say that their primary motivation has been to build something lasting, not to make a lot of money. And I would agree, my motivation to set up, build and develop my social media business comes from the enjoyment I get from the work that I do, combined with the thanks and respect from my clients because of the great results that I can help them to achieve. Whilst I need money, as we all do to live, it is most definitely a by-product, not the main motivating factor to running my own business. Continue reading

Are you Yo-Yo-ing in and out of social media?

Social media, it’s a bit like a diet, you decide you really must lose weight and join a club and embark on a healthy eating plan and really get stuck into it in the first week or two.  All is going well, you have lost a few pounds and your clothes start fitting better and you start to feel good about yourself again.   But then ……….. an invitation drops through the door for a party/wedding/meal out and you think “Oh I should be okay to have a few drinks and a meal, what harm can it do” – and before you know it you are back to square one. Workshops, hands-on or off?

So you’ve signed up for the workshop, got your notepad, pen and paid your money.  But have you asked if it is a hands-on workshop where you bring your laptop or tablet?

Why am I asking this question?

The simple answer is – ease of learning.

It is a well-known fact that human beings have a short attention span, they say two hours of listening and learning is generally the right amount at once so that everything can be taken on board.  Yes, there will be others who can manage a whole day listening to someone teaching, but in my experience with social media, two hours seems to be the optimum time. Hashtags Do’s and Dont’s

Hashtags, we’ve all heard of them (if you don’t where have you been?) but are you using them correctly,  Chances are, probably not.

Spending most of my life online with the likes of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc. etc. I see a lot of misuse of these little critters.   Things likes #hello and #hi.  There really is no point in using these at all.  And Why?

Well here is why.   Think about what your audience is searching for.  Say for example you have scarves to sell, using the hashtag scarves is not going to get people to look you up.  However using hashtags such as #fashion, #fashionista, #fashionblogger is going to be much better as they are well established hashtags that are used all the time.  Continue reading

I don’t need anyone to write my blogs/social media/web copy.  Why would I when I can do it myself.  But can you?

Do you see your business from your customers point of view or are you just seeing it from your point of view? Is it too technical so that no one will understand it?  Well quite frankly yes, some of you are!

Now don’t get me wrong, there are some people who really can do their own and make an excellent job of it, but then again there are those who just can’t. Continue reading

Let’s play nicely!

Networking, a place to meet like minded people, build relationships and trust, make lasting friendships and ultimately get some business.

But wait, is this always the case?  Well frankly no.

Now don’t get me wrong there are some wonderful people who go networking and I have made some great friendships with people but there is always the oddball, come on admit it you’ve met one if you are honest.

Some people just don’t get networking, they go once and say it’s not for them, they didn’t get any business from it or they felt uncomfortable.  But with everything in life you have to give it time, talk to people about anything and everything, except your business. That can come later.  Smiling

How does your business card shape up?

business cardNo self respecting business owner would be without a business card would they?  No of course they wouldn’t.  They are your shop window to all your services and products, provide your phone number, website address and other relevant information.

However, one of the things that always seem to be missing are your social media channels. The whole world and his dog are on social media nowadays, (yes dogs do have twitter accounts), so why wouldn’t you tell people you are too?

Is it enough to just have the symbol on the card? Yes if your twitter handle is the same as your business name, if not put the name of your account on.  Don’t leave it to chance that they may visit your website and find out from there.  Chances are they probably wont. Continue reading
